Season’s greetings, Power BI Community! As we wrap up an incredible year, the Microsoft Power BI team is taking a break for December. All planned updates will roll out in January including the next Power BI Desktop release. As we approach another year of innovation, let us take a moment to reflect on some key highlights from 2024.

Power BI Desktop September 2019 Feature Summary

You’ll notice one of our exciting updates right away when creating new reports with the September update of Power BI Desktop, a new, modern default theme! Not only do we have a new default theme, but we’ve more than doubled the number of built-in theme options for your report. If you’re a theme author, potentially more exciting are the updates to our theme JSON format which make it much quicker and easier for you to create your own custom themes that significantly change the look and feel of your report. Thanks to an intern project, we’re also releasing a frequently requested modeling feature: custom format strings. And of course, we have plenty of incremental improvements this month, with some performance improvements, more dynamic formatting options, updates to our personalized visualization pane, and more.

Introducing Power BI mobile app’s new look (preview)

Today, we’re excited to announce the public preview of the “new look” now available on Power BI Mobile.  We’ve refreshed our app and introduced new experiences, adding a home page that provides quick access to your commonly used content, and new navigation bars that give you an easy way of navigating through the app. With the new and refreshed experiences, it’s now quicker and easier to find what you need, when you need it.

What’s new for SQL Server 2019 Analysis Services RC1

We are excited to announce RC1 of SQL Server 2019 Analysis Services (SSAS 2019). The SSAS 2019 release is now feature complete! We may still make performance improvements for the RTM release. RC1 introduces the following features: Custom ordering of calculation items in calculation groups Query interleaving with short query bias for high concurrency workloads Online attach for optimized synchronization of read-only replicas SuperDAXMD for improved performance of Power BI reports over SSAS multidimensional Governance setting to control Power BI cache refreshes

Change to Summarized Data Export behavior with Build permission

As we rolled out the preview of Shared Datasets and the new Build permission, we received feedback that our limitations on export of summarized data from a visual are overly restrictive. We are adjusting our approach based on your feedback. Specifically, we will allow users with the Read permission to export summarized data from a visual.
